"Radical Amazement" Thoughts #1

In conjunction with the worship series "Radical Amazement," I will post several quotes each week from the book Radical Amazement, by Judy Cannato, on which this worship series is based. The following are some quote that inspired last Sunday's worship.

"Thomas Aquinas said that 'a mistake in our understanding of creation will necessarily cause a mistake in our understanding of God.' Our understanding of the universe has undergone a revolution in our lifetime, and if what Thomas says is true, we must accept the challenge to rethink and reshape our relationship to the divine in a way that resonates with the new discoveries about creation."

"The phrase 'radical amazement' comes from Abraham Heschel, who said that wonder or radical amazement is the chief characteristic of a religious attitude toward life and the proper response to our experience of the divine."

"I once heard a story from the Native American tradition of the belief that a human being could not reach maturity without making room within herself for the immensities of the universe."

The Big Bang

"Everything we are, have ever been, or hope to be is rooted in the moment when time and space began and life burst forth.

"At the moment of birth, the universe was bathed in light."

"Most of the time when we speak of light we are referring to that which is visible, but in actuality most light falls outside the visible spectrum."

"One of the difficulties that we have in the spiritual life comes from knowing that divine light, like the material manifestation of light, is most often not visible, lying just beyond the ability of our unaided eye to detect."

"Elizabeth Johnson says, 'The act of creation is already a Pentecost -- a first and permanent outpouring of the fiery Spirit of life."
